This was my first Junji Ito manga! It was the only one they had by him at a local comic shop, and I was really excited to read it, as I had become fascinated by his art online. I think that a lot of the stories in this collection are some of his weaker, I liked the haunted house ones though because it's really fun seeing Souichi grown up. Overall, this book was the beginning of my obsession with Ito's work, and because of that I'm fond of this manga. I don't think I've ever been so excited for an english publication of a manga before. I read this one online WAY before it was offically translated and published, becuase its Souichi, how could I not? I needed to learn about one of Ito's most famous characters. When it dropped in american stores I bought it immediately. Love this manga! Honestly, this is probably my least favorite Junji Ito book. The concept is kinda cool, and I think that there's interesting analysis to be made about the horrors of male violence, but I feel like the book never wants to dive into that theme properly. The whole thing got really repetative really fast, and being the longest english Ito omnibus, it was a drag to get through. I can't actually rememeber if I finished the last few chapters... If I had to choose one, this would be my single favorite manga of all time. I think Uzumaki gets a lot of praise, and it deserves all of it. It is such a unique horror, and executes it perfectly. Both the bodies and minds of each character slowly break down, with both manifestations of horror building off the other perfectly. Weird, beautiful, and terrifying; Uzumaki is a horror story you will never forget I really liked this one! Nagabe always has such a beautiful artstyle, and the moment I saw the cover for this book I knew I had to get it. I'm a big fan of stories that explore sexual themes in unconventional/scary ways, and I think the dynamic between the two main leads is really interesting. If you liked the psychosexual elements of Beastars like me, you'll love this book This was the first novel I actually sat down and finished in 5 years. I'm not kidding. After middle school I basically stopped reading literature. I read a lot of comics and listened to audiobooks, but when it came to reading REAL books... yeah I have instagram why would I read a boring book? My attention span/literacy got so fucked in highschool, and I'm really trying to repair it by reading more. Especially now that I'm programming shit; like yeah I need to be able to read REALLY well cause code is confusing as fuck. I bought this book after the store I went to didn't have the Ichi the Killer manga I was looking for. As I was about to leave I saw it on a shelf and thought: "Fuck it, if I pay $17 for a book that'll make me have to read it." Plus I really like the premise of it. This book is really good at holding your attention. The entire thing is super bleak, and showcases to you its nihilistic world. I think the part that got to me the most was when it described Marcos working at the butcher shop before the transition, and how he would have to cut away the visible rot on spoiled meat so it could still be sold.
